Artists Josh Devine
One Direction, Skepta, Drummer Of Tomorrow.
Blink and you would have missed Josh transform from hardworking schoolie to professional player, but don't get us wrong, this hasn't been some overnight talent show cash-in or a lucky break.
Josh has been studying and honing his craft from the age of three. From there balancing study and schoolwork with practice and musical development, Josh cut his teeth as a performing musician in various bands in and around the Leicester music scene.
Realising his ingrained passion and flare as a drummer, Josh decided put his skills and relentless practice to the test against 300 entrants at Toni Canelli's national drum competition Beat 2007. After an initial selection process, Josh made his way through to the live final to battle it out with 24 other contestants at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, no mean feat for a 15 year old! Josh's technical maturity and musicality shone and secured him the title of 2007 winner, fuelling the fire to pursue what is undeniably his path in life.
Continuing to push himself and develop his character and voice as a drummer, Josh entered and again, made his way to the live final of our very own Mapex Drummer Of Tomorrow competition in 2008. As one of the younger performers in the competition, few had known what to expect from Josh and it soon transpired to audience and judges alike, that here was a serious talent to be reckoned with. Josh stunned in the technical category, blazing a path with a performance far beyond his years, few were surprised to hear the winner of the 2008 technical category... and onto the International final at Frankfurt Music Fair where Josh would perform infront of Lamb Of God's Chris Adler and Santana's Walfredo Reyes Jr!
Now officially associated with Mapex, Josh secured a slot to perform on the mainstage of the London Drum Show 2008 at London's Excel Centre where he again stepped up to the plate and delivered a jaw dropping clinic to over 500 visitors (something you would catch few of us here at Mapex ever attempting).
From here it was continuous hard work and good working nature that secured Josh professional work within the industry. Studios sessions, shows and numerous tours with For all my Valentines, Charlee Drew and Fandangle begun to fill the diary.
Josh has most recently been working with the ground breaking UK rapper, Skepta. Since being in the chair, things haven't stopped for Josh, they hit the Radio 1 Live Lounge at Maida Vale in Jan 2011, dropped into the top 20 album chart with "Doin it Again' in early 2011 and then embarked on a sold out UK tour March the same year. The guys have shared stages with UK upstarts Chipmunk, Dappy from NDubz, Giggs and Boy Better Know.
Most recently, Josh topped off the summer performing to an audience of thousands with Skepta on a sunny Saturday at Glastonbury but that is by no means the end of it, a July show at Wembley with Busta Rhymes, Saun Paul, Shaggy and others keeps the ball rolling and then just when there's a moment to come up for air, further touring a sessions await Josh in the autumn, now that's what we call a success story..
