Lofty - Imperial Vipers

Sometimes the best things come from the most unlikely of sources. This has always been the case with UK music. Whether it is Burnage, Colchester or Lowestoft, the UK has a habit of creating great music in the most unlikely of settings. Perhaps it’s that British phenomenon where a lack of other opportunities creates music packed with ideas and energy. But, whatever the reason, it’s likely that a new town will be added to this list. Dunstable, Bedfordshire: home of the Imperial Vipers.
IImperial Vipers are Ash Simmons (Vocals), Wevs (Guitars), Corky (Guitars), Bim (Bass), Lofty (Drums).. The band were brought together by main songwriter Wevs in early 2003. Wevs had spent 6 months travelling around Australia on the cheap partaking in his second love – surfing. Returning to a rainy, dismal Dunstable in late 2002, Wevs had to decide what to do with his life. An acoustic guitar had been Wevs companion on his surfing journey and by the time he arrived back in England he already had a core of songs and an idea of sound established. Despite a love of surfing that had taken him from Indonesia to Fiji, from Morocco to Hawaii, his choice was made – rock and roll.
Wevs set about recruiting a band of old friends and acquaintances who all wanted to play straight up, no frills rock and roll. A style of music the UK invented but that has been quiet of late. The friends that went on to make up the Imperial Vipers were stuck in a series of dead end jobs wondering what their next move would be. The monotony only broken up by their shared love of Luton FC – a club who have already taken the Imperial Vipers on as their unofficial band (Eminence regularly sponsor Luton games). From the bands initial beginnings they determined to do things there own way – dismissing the old fashioned idea of demo-ing the major labels, they looked to set up on their own and tour relentlessly. Roping in another long time friend as manager the band have achieved a huge amount for an unsigned band on their own.
