If you know jazz, then you know of Mapex artist, Mat Marucci. His resume reads like a who's who of recent current jazz greats including Jimmy Smith, Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Eddie Harris, Buddy De Franco, Les McCann, Bobby Shew, Don Menza, Pharaoh Sanders and John Tchicai.
Mat is staying busy. His most recent project, an album recorded with German pianist, Markus Burger is entitled Genesis and is receiving glowing reviews. Clifford Allen from allaboutjazz.com, says, "Genesis is valuable proof of not only the flexibility of two musicians, but how improvisation works on a grander scale. Adaptability of material - not just phrases and notes, but the material of players and of interplay - is central to creative music. More About Mat
Last week, mapexdrums.com received an unsolicited review of one of Mat's recent performances. Gregory A. Cain wrote, "Last Sunday evening I attended a performance here in Sacramento being done by the Markus Burger quartet. Drummer Mat Marucci was playing a new set of your drums.... I've seen Mat play several times - his playing is always excellent. But these new drums make his sound even better. In particular the snare has projection that is as good as any I've ever heard from a snare drum.... The soft notes, cross-sticking and brush strokes were clear and distinct and the loud notes cut through well without being overbearing.... Obviously this is a testament to both Mat's technique and the excellent drums you're building.... Keep up the good work!"
The drums he's referring to is Mat's new set - a beautiful Orion kit in a stunning Ebony Burst finish. Mat's setup, while eclectic, is straight-on jazz, an 18-inch bass drum, two 12 x 8 rack toms, a 14-inch floor tom and a 14 x 5.5 snare.
