WALFREDO REYES JR. CLINICS IN CHINA
Walfredo Reyes Jr. was giving drumming clinics
in China from June 11-22. He toured 5 different cities from north
to south: Guanjou, Kunming, Dalian, Tienjing, Shanghai. Walfredo
is known for his expertise about all kinds of modern rhythms,
but what sets him apart is his familiarity with percussion rhythms
from different cultures all around the word and his ability to
fuse modern and native rhythms in an appealing way.
During his
clinics, Walfredo starts with a stunning solo that combines with
several different rhythms from Brazil, Cuba and
Africa. All those who attended were impressed by his technical
skills and wide repertoire of rhythms. When combining different
rhythms, Walfredo explained how it should sound and what it should
feel like when played together. Many of the clinic participants
were inspired by the new sounds and rhythms that he demonstrated.
Walfredo’s
clinic in Kunming was at the Yun-Nan College Music School. While
there, the Principal gave him a certificate
honoring his contributions to modern music and drumming and thanking
him for being at Guest Professor at the Music School. More than
600 people attended this clinic and a security crew had to keep
other students and musicians outside because the building was
filled to capacity. Those outside stayed through the whole clinic,
listening excitedly to the rhythms that they could hear.
Walfredo
shared his enthusiasm for Mapex Drums at the clinics. He is impressed
by the sound and wide tuning range and he can
easily get the sound he needs. Many of his musician friends are
also impressed with the Mapex sound and use Mapex Drums in their
studios as well. Walfredo also mentioned that the Janus double
pedal is a favorite of his. The rock steady base and firm chain
make him feel very confident when performing.
Walfredo would
like to thank everyone who made these clinics possible, especially
the clinic participants, Mapex Drums and the local dealers. His
new DVD "Global Beat” and new CD “Welcome to
Wally’s
World” are now available.
